Country-house B&Bs may be just a few miles distant from urban guest houses, but we operate in a totally different marketplace. All of us take great pride in our individuality, expressed not only in the peace and beauty of our location, but in the character of our homes and the warmth of our hospitality. These characteristics have been built on centuries of tradition and they are not easily measured by quality assessment schemes.

With no more than three unique letting rooms, we can afford to be generous in looking after our guests' individual needs. Hairdryers and hospitality trays should be taken for granted; we are happy to go the extra mile by booking tables at restaurants, ordering taxis, dealing with any special dietary requirements, recommending walks and places to visit, lending out maps and torches (there is no light pollution here), and placing vases of flowers from the garden in all our rooms.

We are convinced that the individuality of a small, friendly country B&B like ours makes for a far more relaxing, entertaining and enjoyable experience than staying in the confines of a town nearby. This applies equally to the older generation who have seen enough of the nightspots, and to younger people seeking a real respite from the pressures of the daily grind.

Home Comforts

Our guests are welcome to use the whole of our house and garden just as they would at home. We have a very comfortable sitting room and a conservatory to relax and read in, with a small library from which guests are welcome to borrow books. We try to be generous with the extras we provide – from mints to mineral waters. There is a hair dryer in each bedroom, and we are happy to lend an iron in our laundry room before weddings or evenings out. We also have excellent drying facilities for walkers’ kit, both in the laundry room and above the Aga in the kitchen. We can usually find a little space in our fridge/freezer for our guests’ special use.

Local Taxis

Taxis in this part of the country – quite unlike most big cities - are remarkably helpful, efficient and easy to book. There are ranks by the quayside in Dartmouth and also at the main line station in Totnes. As we are only four miles and an eight minute drive into Dartmouth, it is simple and inexpensive to take a taxi into the town for a special evening out, returning to the peace and quiet of the countryside afterwards.

Telephones and the Internet

Most people come here to escape from all the cares of the world, but some would like to keep in touch with friends and relatives, or of necessity their businesses. All the main mobile telephone networks work well in this area and we can even lend out a spare Orange prepay phone if required. With a broadband connection and a wireless router, we can now provide high speed internet access throughout the house for laptop computers. We also have copying and fax facilities in our study.
